Martin Greenfield, the middle-aged professor in “A Teacher of the Holocaust,” enters into a romantic relationship with Rachel Klein, a therapist with children and a Holocaust survivor. Gradually, Greenfield confronts the unhealed wounds of the survivor and—more disturbing—the limits of his own compassion. In another story, Michael Arnold, returning to Jewish observance after an aimless life, fills his days with acts of loving kindness, and then makes a decision that costs him the wife he loves. Indifference to human suffering, guilt and repentance, the loss of a son in war and its impact on family, the failed attempt to repair broken intimacy—these are some of the themes that receive moving expression in this collection of stories. Teichman’s characters feel the pull of Jewish values. They have good intentions and want to lead good lives but, like many of us, often lack the inner strength to become their best selves. “Milton Teichman speaks to us as a modern day Bernard Malamud. . . . In these stories,Teichman raises issues of shame, fear, love, failure and courage, and the deep personal challenges that lead to understanding and growth. . . . A Teacher of the Holocaust is a thinking person’s page turner.” --Kathleen Spivack, author of With Robert Lowell and His Circle and Unspeakable Things.

A lovely, thought provoking book by a lovely, thought provoking man. I met the author at his gallery in Brewster, MA and found him fascinating, a marvelous teacher, and a gifted sculptor. When I later learned he had written a book I decided to buy it in anticipation of having a greater insight into an artist who's work I really like. The book is a a pleasure to read. While each of the 12 short stories appears simple on the surface, the lessons, morals, and thinking they each may provoke is quite remarkable. It's a good book on which to reflect, to discuss in a book group, and to ponder over your favorite libation. I'll re-read it many times as I know there is wisdom and insight in his stories.

Fantastic! Couldn't put it down. A real page-turner. Read this book. You won't be disappointed.
Each story contains something to remember, something to think seriously about, something to be challenged by.
Clearly written by someone with a great deal of empathy and compassion for those around him.
Engrossing, entertaining and deeply moving, Milton Teichman's short stories tell about the experiences of modern-day Jews in America. A delightful read!
An interesting collection of stories which lend itself to group discussion, especially those which are open-ended.Varied moral and ethical problems are posed and developed. The author writes with a sensitivity to the dilemmas involved by the protagonists.
This very intelligently written book is a delight to read. Each story engrosses the reader from the onset and one becomes involved in the very real characters and their plights. The stories are perfect length for a quick pick-up or short enough to read a few at a time. I enthusiastically recommend this well thought out, well written collection.
In “A Teacher of the Holocaust,” Milton Teichman compassionately observes what
people do without passing judgment on it.
When, for example, in the first story, an expert in Holocaust literature finds that there
are limits to how much he can care for a Holocaust survivor, and their romantic
relationship explodes in a scene of shattering pain, Teichman contrives to draw them
both sympathetically. The tearful woman is furious, and the good Professor gets no
sleep that night. As another character says in the last story, “What human being doesn’t
make mistakes?”
I found myself sorry to finish this slim, thoughtful book, and didn’t want it to be over. So
I re-read it, and got even more out of it. Each story is carefully drawn and well worth
reading. But I suppose that if I had to choose my three favorites – a difficult choice
because they are all good -- I’d choose the first one (which gives the collection its
name), and I’d choose "The Request," in which a loving wife feels she has to separate from
her equally loving husband because she wants to adopt twin boys, while he
finds he is too old to have his peace violated with children, and finally I’d choose "The
New Season," with its vivid detailing of what it is to cope with poverty in the depression,
and to find, despite it all, “a strange joy” to be “the recipient of some great good
fortune.”
For those who would appreciate a closely observed, nuanced account of the choices
people make, I unhesitatingly recommend this book.
Five stars
